Chapter 7 – The Cocoon

The creature moved through the pitch-blackness, relishing its new territory – a mammoth, underground bunker severed from the world above. It was a haven of absolute isolation, a sanctuary suited to its vile purpose.

Once more, the creature’s heightened senses grasped at the lingering echoes of the soldiers draped in ominous black. Their presence weighed heavily in this chamber, saturating the air with a stifling and malevolent aura, as if the very walls conspired in the horrors they had crafted. The entity understood that these men, adorned in their sinister attire, were the architects of this place, fashioning it into a maleficent crucible of unimaginable genocide.

It perceived that these soldiers had cast a long, dark shadow upon the world. They were the embodiment of a regime’s darkest instincts, of its most debased desires. Their distorted morality, their utter disdain for life – it all held a morbid allure.

The creature’s contemplation of the sinister creators of the chamber gave way to an instinctual need to construct its cocoon. It was a primal compulsion, ingrained in the very essence of its existence. The entity yielded to this innate drive, assured that it was the correct course to pursue. It convulsed, its form twisting and contorting. Bones snapped and squelched, sickeningly audible, as the creature swelled like a demonic pufferfish, inflated to grotesque proportions. Its skin split open, tearing apart along its entire length, and a multitude of writhing tentacles wriggled out from within.

A viscous, inky substance sprayed from the beast’s mouth, coating the corner of the chamber in a slick sheen that soon began to solidify. With an eerily purposeful motion, the tentacles manipulated the substance, moulding and shaping it like a crazed sculptor crafting a macabre masterpiece. The creature moved with a single-minded focus, its thoughts consumed by the task at hand. The process was slow and arduous, stretching out over hours upon hours, as the monstrous cocoon grew larger and more grotesque with each passing moment.

Soon, the hour of the transfer would arrive – that moment when the youth would sever their ties with their progenitor and undertake the final leg of their gruesome transformation. Each offspring, bearing its own distinct features and formidable gifts, would thrive in isolation within their respective chambers, honing their skills for the inevitable day of reckoning.

John and his team made their way to the end of the tunnel, the journey smooth despite the noxious stench of the slimy coating on the floor and walls. The lighting team had done an excellent job, casting an eerie glow that seemed to pulse with a life of its own.

They discovered a disused elevator shaft that had been sealed with concrete on the floor above. Additionally, they found a ramp leading to a concrete ceiling, indicating that someone had taken great measures to conceal the entrances to this sub-level. John suspected that the elevator and ramp once went to the level beneath the accommodation block, which was now home to the armoury, a number of store rooms, the six Armoured sections and Dressing Station Bravo.

Gower couldn’t help but feel drawn to the two wooden doors that stood sentinel on either side of the tunnel. They were unremarkable doors, with no distinguishing features to speak of, but their very presence called out to him, begging him to uncover the secrets they guarded. With a growing sense of unease, he approached the door on the left. The metal was icy cold against his palm, and he hesitated for a moment before pushing the door open, the hinges groaning in protest, protesting their long years of disuse. It took a concerted effort, the wood swollen and resistant, as if reluctant to reveal the secrets held within. This door, it seemed, had not been opened for forty years, and it bore the weight of those decades with a stoic reluctance.
