Chapter 9 – Sleepless Nights

The creature slithered through the snow-covered woods, its mind a swirling mix of disappointment and excitement. It had made three kills, but it had been hoping for more. Still, it couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride in its work. The feasts had been delicious, and the bodies had provided plenty of sustenance.

It moved with caution, careful not to leave any tracks that could give away its location. The snowfall provided an added advantage, as the fresh layer of white quickly masked any impressions it made on the ground. Having ceased excreting its slime, it became challenging to track, and it was well aware that the soldiers would now be searching for it.

As the creature slithered back to its dark lair, its heart pounded with anticipation. Its offspring were growing larger and stronger with each passing day, and it was time for them to feed. With a shudder that wracked its entire frame, the entity plunged six slimy tubes into the cocoon, the same ones that had transferred its progeny to their current abode. But now, they served a new purpose, delivering a thick, lumpy liquid that oozed like soup into the grotesque dwelling.

The process was slow, and deliberate. The entity savoured every moment as it watched its offspring grow more powerful with each passing minute. They were grotesque creatures, with elongated limbs and misshapen heads, but to the creature, they were beautiful.

As the feeding drew to a close, the entity retracted its tubes, observing with a mixture of curiosity and dread as its progeny wriggled and writhed. It couldn’t make out which of them possessed the fortitude to endure, to claw their way to the top of the heap, but it knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that only a single creature would emerge victorious. It would be a brutal spectacle, a merciless struggle for supremacy, but it was necessary.

For now, the creature rested. It was tired from the exertion of the hunt, and from the feeding of its offspring. It knew that the next time it left the safety of its lair, things would be different. The soldiers would be out there, searching for it – armed with weapons that it did not understand. The being wondered about these strange devices that the soldiers carried, puzzled by their purpose and design. Were they clubs? Why hadn’t the soldiers used them? The creature could not say for sure, but it was certain that it would find out soon enough.

Outside, the snow was a thick, heavy blanket, descending from the sky in great flurries that nearly obscured everything in sight. It was the kind of storm that made you want to huddle inside, safe and warm, and forget about the world beyond your windows. But for all its deceptive beauty, the snowfall could not conceal the horror that lurked beneath the ground.
