As the moment approached, the creature’s senses sharpened. It knew that the time had come, the moment when its offspring would emerge from their individual chambers within the cocoon and engage in a fierce struggle for survival.
In the shadowy recesses of the creature’s mind, a strange and unnerving connection had begun to take hold, a link with its progeny that had blossomed unexpectedly. Like an invisible cord of psychic energy, it wove them all together, allowing the creature to peer deep into their souls and perceive their every emotion and intention. It was a curious and unsettling sensation, this newfound link. The entity could sense their anxiety and fear, as they struggled against the confines of their individual chambers, driven by a fierce desire to emerge victorious. But there was something else there too – something dark and malevolent that stirred in the depths of their hearts.
The creature slipped out of its lair, its senses alive with anticipation. There was no point in staying confined to the shadows when it could connect with its offspring through their link. It knew of their progress, of the battle they would wage within the cocoon, and it thirsted to witness their final transformation. For the creature knew that only one of them would remain, the strongest and most ruthless of the brood. And when that day came, it would return to claim its prize, basking in the triumph of its offspring and the dark glory of their bloodline.
The being surveyed the entrance to its lair, ensuring that no unwelcome guests could slip in unnoticed. Satisfied that it was hidden, the beast slunk into the embrace of the surrounding trees, its supernatural senses reaching out, probing, feeling for any sign of soldiers. But something was amiss – except for some small forest animals, the woods were barren.
Undeterred, the creature pressed on, delving deeper into the forest until it sensed a small group of soldiers congregating near the site of its first kill. The being’s hunger for flesh gnawed at its insides, driving it to investigate this new target. It watched from the shadows as a handful of soldiers stood outside a small building, nestled inside the camp’s perimeter fence.
It noticed that the soldiers were wearing full face masks, a favourable circumstance, as it meant their vision would be impaired. The only thing between the creature and the soft-skins was the flimsy perimeter fence, which it knew could be easily breached with a single swipe of its massive talons. Beyond that obstacle, nothing stood in its way. The entity prepared to strike, but just before it could do so, the door to the small building flew open, and a group of soldiers stumbled out, their faces twisted in distress as they coughed and sputtered. The entity didn’t understand why the soldiers were stumbling about, their minds addled and their movements clumsy.
It was pondering a frontal assault, a direct confrontation, when the reason for the soldiers’ affliction slammed into it like a runaway truck. Something in the air had left the building with the humans, instantly triggering the creature’s finely tuned senses. Its eyes welled up, its throat seared, and it let loose a sneeze that echoed like the bellowing of an enraged demon from the deepest, darkest abyss.
